The variant found on Mahjong.ac is solitaire. It was derived from a four person game consisting of Chinese tiles and it came about through centuries of play time from tribes originating in parts of east Asia.

Solitaire Mahjong is an extremely popular and an easy game to learn. It is quite addictive because of its simplicity and the beauty of the game is that unless played with skill and a thought process, board victory isn't a guarantee. Success in the game requires a strategic methodology and concentration since one choice will influence successive choices.

HOW TO PLAY MAHJONG

The objective of a good game is to remove all the tiles visible on the board choosing the right tiles at the right time from the sub set available which are eligible for selection. Tiles may only be selected for removal if no tile exists directly above it and either their left or right edge is free from obstruction.

Further more once tiles are selected they need match a key criteria before they are removed. In the simplest case the criteria is that the tiles selected match, that is they are equal and of the same form or they belong to a specialised class suit.

TILE SUITS & MATCH CRITERIONS

There are different suits amongst the tiles. The suit determines the match criteria required before the selected sub set of tiles may be removed. Most of the tiles require an exact match. This means a tile need match another which is equal. Tiles from the bambo suit must match the same tile from the same bambo suit. Matching a bambo suit tile with a dot suit tile would not be eligible for a match critera.

Example Suit Types

Some suits are not incremental however and thus can be mixed and matched. These special alternatives are known as the four seasons and the four flowers. Seasons and flowers symbolise the Earths' diversity through physical weather and the vibrance of bloom and blossom. They are special in that any flower can be paired with another flower and any season will equal another season. The same rule does not apply to alternative suits.

COMPETITIVE SCORING

Our games are competitive so we purposely provide zero hints and no shuffling. If you cannot solve the board then you can retry the same board or choose another. We use scoring to rank players based upon their performance. These scores persist through life for registered members. Scores will not persist for non-registered guests.

One point is awarded for every tile eliminated. For a match criteria (one pair of matching tiles), two points are given. If a match criteria is successful under 1.5 seconds, an extra point is provided. If under 1 second, we grace you with two points. Its possible albeit difficult to consistently achieve four points for eliminating match pair criterions. The form must be good and the speed exceptional.

If you are successful and defeat a board you will be awarded a healthy surplus of 500 points. During weekends of interest and holiday events we run marathons where we increase our points multiplier meaning you can accumulate bigger point quantities to fight for season leadership.

Should you replay the same board any points you accumulate will only be credited to your account if you improve the past score. You cannot replay the same board to double your points balance.
